rising-stars-news.jpgThe Club’s Sports Manager Tony Clarke said it was a great privilege to be able to lend a financial helping hand to so many local up and coming sports stars at such a crucial time in their careers.

“Competing in a higher level event is always a fantastic honour, but it can quickly become an expensive honour when the costs for uniforms, training and travelling are all taken into consideration,” Mr Clarke said.

“It’s our way of helping the next generation of sporting stars, and perhaps the next Darren Lockyer or Cathy Freeman could be among them.”

Ella Connolly
Rising Star Ella Connolly made the switch from long distance running to sprinting and in the process the 10-year-old took home gold and bronze medals from the School Sports Australia Junior Track and Field Championships in Victoria earlier in the year.

Taylor McKeown
In April, 2011 16-year-old breaststroke Australian Age Champion Taylor McKeown took on some of the sports big guns in the Australian Swimming Championships and then again in December, she won five Gold medals and three Silver medals during the Queensland Swimming Championships. Her time in the Open Womens 200m breaststroke also earned her a spot in the Queensland Academy of Sport Target Squad alongside Olympians Stephanie Rice and Leisel Jones. All excellent preparations for this year’s Telstra Championships – the qualifying event for the London Olympics.

Josh Fritsch
Young Burpengary baseballer Josh Fritsch had a busy 2011 not only competing in the Under 16 National Youth Baseball Championships and the Queensland School Sport Open Baseball Titles, but also being named in the Under 16 All Star National Team and attending the Major League Baseball Academy on the Gold Coast.

Blake Watkin
2011 was an important year for state Taekwondo champion Blake Watkin. Not only was he selected to compete in the Chuncheon Taekwondo International Championships in July but he was also a Bronze Medallist in the Individual Poomsae and a Gold Medallist in the Team Music Poomsae at the TKD Australian Nationals. Poomsae is the technical side of Taekwondo, as apposed to the sparring.
