Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club Tracy Dreyer said proper dog training provides a safer environment for everyone including the dog.“Pet ownership is much more enjoyable when you know your dog will do what they are told,” she said.
“For example, teaching your dog to walk beside you on lead without pulling your arm out of its socket; to respond to sit, drop and stay commands and to come to you when called.
“Many people who join obedience clubs to learn basic obedience skills progress through the classes to compete in obedience and agility trials. The Club itself is also a good way of meeting people with similar interests.”
If you’re considering dog obedience training, your dog needs:
• To be at least four months old.
• To be immunised and in good health. Proof of immunisation is required.
• A nylon, cotton or leather lead at least 1.5-2m long.
• A suitably sized check chain, Halti or Gentle Leader.
While you the owner needs:
• Proof of ID.
• Shoes that are enclosed and suitable for running in - no thongs or bare feet.
• To be at least 12-years-old.
Tracy said that new obedience club members are accepted on the first Monday night of each month.
“We ask you to leave your dog at home on the intake night. This night is an introduction to the Club and your instructor will give you a demonstration of some experienced handlers and their dogs followed by training information, ground rules and general Club information.
“You will get a chance to ask any questions you have regarding your dog.”
Membership fees are $60 per year for new members, which includes the first two months of training and automatic membership to Caboolture Sports Club.
Or if you have a new four-legged addition to the family, now is the time to think about enrolling your dog in Puppy Pre-School.
“Classes are on Thursday nights from 6pm and costs $60 for a five week course for pup aged from 8-12 weeks,” Tracy said.
“Some of the topics that will be covered during the course will be basic obedience training, correct social behaviour, emergency first aid, parasite control, nutrition, care of coat, eyes, ears and teeth, and child safety around dogs.”
